Location
This was taken at a beach called Mossyard on the SW Coast of Scotland - the sea is in the Solway Firth. If you would like to see a short, behind-the-scenes video of the set up of this photo shoot, then check out this entry on YouTube - https://youtu.be/7bZG2y4kfCQTime
Although taken around midday in early December. It had been raining for about 3 weeks solid, and rained for nearly 2 weeks without much break after this. However, we managed to do the shoot on the one dry day, although the heavy clouds threatened the entire timeLighting
The dull, overcast nature of the ambient light meant I was never going to get the contrasts of light and shadow I wanted, so I set up 2 Canon speedlites on stands either side of them.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 7D Mk 2 with a Canon 24-70mm, f/2.8 lens and 2 Canon speedlitesInspiration
Café Largo are a fun-loving band with a latin-jazzy feel, who decided to take me up on an offer to do a free shoot for bands with quirky ideas.Editing
I changed the colour of the woman's skirt, and the seat, from blue to red, to create a consistent colour palette. I also made subtle adjustments to give it a slight painterly feel to hint towards a Jack Vettriano style paintingIn my camera bag
For the past year I've been using a Canon 7D mk2, which I love. The 3 lenses I use most are my Canon f/2.8 24-70mm, which is pretty much my workhorse lens; a Canon f/2.8 70-200mm which is fantastic for shooting live performances - getting in close in low light conditions; and finally a wide angle Canon 10-22mm for when I need to take in a lot in a small space. I also usually have 2 or 3 Canon speedlights to hand and an assortment of softboxes and modifiers.Feedback
Although it wasn't raining, it wasn't sunny and it wasn't particularly warm either, so I did all the test shots with everyone still wrapped up in coats and scarves, and it was only when I was pretty sure of my composition and lighting set up did we move everything into place and do the actual shoot.
