On this ride I had my Nikon D40 in my Bike rack bag and took it with me to the Falls. wile photographing the falls I noticed 3 kayakers working their way down through the drops and quickly focused on catching the action.

Wonderful photo. You had to go with the kayak that presented itself, but you could not have chosen a better color. the photo is tack sharp, the composition is ideal, and the timing is perfect. Well Done!

Thank you for choosing my photo. It is one of my favorites. I have a large canvas print of it on my wall. Right place at the right time.

Location
This photo was taken from the overlook, on the Maryland side of Great Falls, on the Potomac river, while on a bike ride on the C&O Canal trail. I don't usually walk out to the falls on the trail when I ride my bike along the canal. I am so glad I decided to take that walk that day.Time
I took this photo October 31st, 2015. It was a warm day so I decided to go for a morning bike ride on the C&O canal trail. I normally put my Olympus Tough camera in my back jersey pocket so I have a camera along should something come along worth taking a picture of. I decided to pack my Nikon D40 and two lenses in my bike bag on my mountain bike and drive to the canal. It was a bright but overcast morning. I rode 13 miles to the falls, arrived at the trail around 11:30. I usually ride on past but, I don't know why that day, I decided to stop, grabbed my camera and walk to the falls.Lighting
I mounted my 70 - 200mm lens on the camera and took a few shots of the rocks and falls when I noticed 4 Kayakers working their way down the falls through the drops and began to follow them . The light was bright which gave me a fast shutter speed, 1/800 at ISO 200, at 200 mm. I was able to freeze the action for a sharp image.Equipment
I used my Nikon D40, 70-200mm lens, I rested my lens on the railing, cushioned using my cycling glove I had the shutter set to continuous to catch the fast changing scene.Inspiration
The photo presented itself shortly after I arrived at the falls when I first spotted the kayakers making their way down. I took many more shots as they progressed and anticipated and waited for them to arrive at the biggest drop. This was a rare opportunity that I was at the right place at the right time, with the right equipment, to capture it.Editing
I used the photo editing program that comes on my HP laptop to enhance the image sharpness, shadow and highlights. The image didn't need a lot of post processing. In my camera bag
I have a Nikon D40 kit I bought at Costco. I now use a Nikon D3400 kit with Nikkor AF-P 70 - 300 mm DX and Nikkor AF-P 18 - 55 DX lenses, UV filters, ND and Polarizing filters. I always carry my Olympus Tough as a backup .Feedback
Be prepared for the unexpected. You never know when a great shot will present itself.
