Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during a workshop conducted at Australia's National Portrait Gallery. The workshop was conducted by the wonderful Australian photographer Peter Coulson who has won multiple awards and shoots campaigns for clients internationally. The model was one of his favourites, Zoe Elena.

Time

The image was taken indoors mid-morning during Autumn.

Lighting

I used the available natural light only.

Equipment

Nikon D200 with Tamron zoom lens, hand-held, no tripod, no flash.

Inspiration

As already mentioned, I was attending a workshop. I was seeking to improve my portraiture skills in a natural lighting situation working with experienced and professional modles under the guidance of an expert. I worked hard at getting a variety of looks, moods, styles in the imagery I shot.

Editing

I shot in colour then changed the mage to monochrome in post-processing using Photoshop. I also sought to enhance the mood of the image by using a digital version of the old darkroom techniques of dodging and burning.

In my camera bag

These days I generally only have my Nikon D700, a Tamron 28-330 Zoom lens and an iPhone 11 with me to shoot with. When using the iPhone, I shoot with the Lightroom app in Professional mode. I always have spare batteries and cards for the D700 with me. If traveling for a length of time, I would have my tripod and flash in my car, but still rarely use either of them preferring the freedom of shooting without a tripod and also preferring natural light.

Feedback

Learning from professionals with extensive experience in the type of work you want to emulate is always helpful. Having access to an experienced model is also of benefit, as she/he will respond well to your directions (and provide you with ideas and looks you might never think of yourself).
