Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at our campsite at Nada Lake, one of the beautiful lakes in The Enchantments, Alpine Lakes Wilderness area in Washington.

Time

This was taken at 7:30am, August 10, 2014.

Lighting

The morning light was great; the haze was caused by nearby forest fires (fire fighting helicopters were dropping in daily to get water from these lakes).

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D5300 and Tokina 11-16mm DXII lens with a Hoya HD2 circular polarizer. Also used my small, hiking tripod.

Inspiration

I wanted to show my family & friends the view we had from our campsite. I actually wanted my wife in this shot but she was still sleeping in the tent. After I made some coffee I set up my tripod and shot this campsite selfie.

Editing

Almost no post-processing, I just adjusted exposure in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

For hiking photography I carry the Nikon D5300 and sometimes the Sony NEX-3. My lenses are the Tokina 11-16mm DXII, Nikon 35mm, and the Nikon 18-55mm.

Feedback

Washington has a lottery system to camp in The Enchantments. My wife and I were lucky to win one of the lottery permits for this site. I've been fortunate to camp in this area twice and hope to be lucky enough to go back. This area is a photographers paradise so if you're a nature/landscape photographer, it should be on your short list. It's almost impossible to take a bad photo here!
