Location
This photos was taken in Province Town Cape Cod, MA from a 27 foot charter boat.Time
Our charter began at 9am and it takes about an hour to enter the large bay area where whales frequent this area for feeding. This photo was taken around noon that day when the whales where being more active. I captured many whales bubble feeding on this trip. The whales in this area have shown to be active in morning and afternoon.Lighting
The sun glare on the water can be an issue for many photo opportunities. This day was partly cloudy and the lower angle on the water was an advantage in terms of composition and lighting on the whales. If we were on a large tour vessel, the downward photo angle would have shown additional glare and a polarizer would be recommended.Equipment
On this trip in July of 2015, I used a Pentax K3 body with Sigma 150-500 lens.Inspiration
Being on the water and experiencing these large whales close-up in the water is captivating. The challenge of being prepared for that next photo requires some experience and patience. I found myself holding the camera to my face for many minutes at time and with a large lens can become quite heavy. Being on a moving object is also challenging with your balance. So, you learn when to hold and wait and not too. This photo was one of those moments; I watched the whale dive and then anticipated where it would breach. This was a very satisfying experience.Editing
I use a product called ACDsee to manage prints. Very little post processing is performed. This photo likely included noise reduction, some lighting adjustments, and color correction. In my camera bag
I recently upgraded from Pentax K3 to Nikon D750. I am very pleased with my new Nikon D750 and look forward to another opportunity at this location for capturing whales. With a new camera and lenses requires a new bag. I typically have 3 lenses and 1 body as well as a tripod, gimbal and ball mounts, and cleaning supplies.Feedback
My recommendation is patience and practice. Try simulating the event and experience before you are actually there. This simulation will help you capture the moments you are looking for. Do not be discouraged when you miss the photo. You may take hundreds of photos but only have a few wow moments. Think ahead and stay focused. Keep your knees bent when on a boat and anticipate the next movement. Good luck and enjoy capturing life's wonderful moments.
