Location
I took this photo at the models home, where I set up my portable photostudio. I'm a selftaught photographer and this time I wanted to test out some new strobes.Time
Although not very important (because the photo was shot in a studio-like environment: the livingroom), the photo was shot around 5.15 pm.Lighting
I'm not pretty sure how the lights were set up, because this photo was shot two-and-a-half year ago. As mentioned I wanted to test some new gear (strobes) and I placed a strobe with a softbox attached to the right of the model as a fill light. The main light is a beautydish in front of the model, slightly above the models eyes. I had to lighten the girl well because of the big hat she's wearing and I didn't want her eyes in the shadow. To fire the strobe, I used a speedlight on my camera, which can be seen as the little dot of light in her pupil.Equipment
The equipment I used was the Panasonic FZ-200, with the build-in lens at ISO 100, f/2.8 and with a shutterspeed of 1/250th of a second. As mentioned above, I used a beautydish, one strobe and a speedlight. I didn't use a tripod (I almost never use one, because I want to work freely and a tripod impedes me).Inspiration
For this shootday, there was not a special intention to make a certain type of photo. But the model showed me this great hat, which is in fact a hat used in a "My Fair Lady" musical and was worn by the models mother at her wedding. All of a sudden I remembered a photo/drawing I had seen maybe a decade ago. In that particular photo/drawing there was a woman with a wonderful hat. The chance of shooting with such a great prop are to be counted on one hand, so we decided to use the hat. The makeup supported the image very well.Editing
I always shoot in RAW to have more opportunities in post-processing. I removed blemishes on the girls' face with the healing brush and by frequency seperation. I also used dodge and burn to reduce the appearance of facial hair (due to the lighting I used). At last I (partially) sharpened the photo by a highpass filter. In my camera bag
I usually carry my main camera the Panasonic FZ-1000 with me and the Panasonic FZ-200 as a backup. I always have an extra battery with me, as well as an extra memorycard. In my bag is also a colorchecker, a lightmeter, a speedlight and a collapsible disc reflector.Feedback
Take your time to setup the lights and instructing the model. Also important for this image was a professional MUA; it makes the postwork less time consuming. So the credits goes also to my MUA and of course my model. Without them, this photo wouldn't have been shot.
