Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the models home, where I set up my portable photostudio.

Time

Although not very important (because the photo was shot in a studio-like environment: the livingroom), the photo was shot around 17:30.

Lighting

I'm not completely sure how the lights were set up, because this photo was shot almost three years ago, but as I can recall it, there was only one light used with a rectangular softbox on the models right side (viewers left side) at approximately 45 degrees. This gives a nice fall-off of the light, creating nice shadows on bothe the model as the flowers she's holding.

Equipment

The equipment I used was the Panasonic FZ-1000, with the build-in lens at ISO 80, f/3.9 and with a shutterspeed of 1/30th of a second. As mentioned above, I used a strobe with a rectangular softbox. I didn't use a tripod (I almost never use one, because I want to work freely and a tripod impedes me).

Inspiration

There was not a particular inspiration. I picked an bought the tulips at a picking garden in the neighbourhood I live in. The colors of the flowers nicely contrasted with the blue dress the model is wearing.

Editing

I always shoot in RAW to have more opportunities in post-processing, I removed some blemishes on the girls'face with the healing brush and by frequency seperation. The photo was shot against a grey backdrop and in post processing I added a new background. I also used dodge and burn like I always do, especially for the eyes and the last thing I always do, is local sharpening via a highpass filter. All is done in the combo Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my main camera, the Panasonic FZ-1000, with me and the good old Panasonic FZ-200 as a backup. I always have an extra battery with me, as well as an extra memorycard. In my bag is also a colorchecker, a lightmeter, a speedlight and a collapsable disc reflector.

Feedback

Take your time to setup the lights and instructing the model. Try to ease the model if necessary. For this particular shoot, the model had done more shoots with me, so we were used to eachother. It's a good idea to have a moodboard, but, in my opinion, this should never limit you from trying other things if the situation permits it. Creativity must also have an outlet.
