Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the models home, where I set up my portable photostudio.

Time

Although not very important (because the photo was shot in a studio-like environment: the livingroom), the photo was shot at 17.40 hours.

Lighting

To lighten the model, I used a beautydish (constant light) as the mainlight, diffused by a semi-transparent white cloth. I yoused a fill-light (flash-head) on the left side of the model.

Equipment

The equipment I used was the Panasonic FZ-1000, with the build-in lens at ISO 80 and f/4.0. As mentioned above, I used a beautydish and a fill-in-flash-head. I didn't use a tripod (I almost never use one, because I want to work freely and a tripod impedes me).

Inspiration

I'm fond of portrait photos with a hat. A long time ago I saw an image (I think it was a photorealistic drawing) of a woman with her hat the way it is depicted it the photo. I always wanted kinda mimic this photo. A couple of years ago I tried to make a simular image in the 3D program Poser (a sort of virtual photostudio), but last year I had the opportunity to shoot it in real life.

Editing

I always shoot in RAW to have more opportunities in post-processing. I removed blemishes on the girls' face with the healing brush and by frequency seperation. I also used dodge and burn to reduce the appearance of facial hair (due to the lighting I used). Then I converted the photo to black and white and at last I (partially) sharpened the photo by a highpass filter and added a small vignette to draw the attention to the eye.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my main camera the Panasonic FZ-1000 with me and the Panasonic FZ-200 as a backup. I always have an extra battery with me, as well as an extra memorycard. In my bag is also a colorchecker, a lightmeter and a speedlight.

Feedback

Take your time to setup the lights and instructing the model. Also important for this image was a professional MUA; it makes the postwork less time consuming. So the credits goes also to my MUA and of course my model. Without them, this photo wouldn't have been shot.
