Location
The picture was taken in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada on the Petitcodiac River. Since a large part of the photo is water it's important to add a little information on this river. It had one of the worlds largest tidal bores. The Causeway gates opened April 2010, so the river was continuing to flush ocean silts when the photo was taken in June 2011. The river was nicknamed the "chocolate river".Time
It was an overcast spring afternoon.Lighting
Natural light was my only option. I was following three herons on both sides of the river.Equipment
I had my first Canon (a 2010 Christmas gift) a Rebel XSi. The lens was an EFS 55-250mm which supports the theroy that expensive equipment isn't always required. Since Herons are very senitive to human presence I was about 40-50 feet away from the birds on the river bank (a full frame camera may have been great option). I used the supports on the Moncton pedestrian bridge to stabilize my camera. I stayed in that spot for an hour or so & took 275-300 shots of the herons.Inspiration
My love of herons. That day was really one of those magical days when everything went just the way I imagined it. The herons were my first successful shoot of birds. This image remains my favourite today.Editing
The pics needed cropping & some adjustments for exposure. In my camera bag
Standard items but it was much lighter in 2011.Feedback
