My lovely family stayed for a week in Whitley Bay, near Newcastle. However, due to work commitments, I was only able to stay for one day before having to catch a train to head back home. On the first morning, I got up early and visited the local landmark, this beautiful lighthouse. Built on the site of a monastery where a small sanctuary light would have acted as a guide to passing ships, St Mary's Lighthouse is situated on the tiny Bait Island along the North East England coastline. It is no longer a working lighthouse, being decommissioned in 1984. This beautiful structure stands 38 metres (125 ft) and was built using 645 blocks of stone and 750,000 bricks. The lighthouse and the adjacent keepers' cottages were built in 1898 by the John Miller company of Tynemouth. I look forward to visiting here again someday.
