This photo was taken out on the lave fields on the south shore of Maui, Hawaii.Time
My wife loves to hike out on the lava fields and this particular day we got a later start than normal. We began our hike in the late afternoon. As we hiked out on the lava fields the waves were huge! We had hiked for an hour or so and realized that if we were going to make it back to the car by nightfall we should turn around. As we changed directions to head back I saw this shot come to life. I had my wife stop and look out over the water from atop the cliffs and captured this picture.Lighting
As it was almost dusk the afternoon sun was low in the sky. Since the sun was so low I opted to go with a silhouette of my wife so that I could keep the dramatic clouds in the sky.Equipment
I took this with a Nikon D800 and Nikon 16-35mm f/4 lens.Inspiration
This shot brings together a lot of things that I love in this world, the ocean, my wife, adventure, Hawaii. I like that the scene shows the beauty of a remote location and the addition of my wife in the frame adds our place in the scene. We were exploring a place we have never seen before.Editing
The dynamic range on the D800 is exceptionally good. Even though I metered for the background my wife was not completely black. There was still some visible detail and color it her figure. So the only post processing that I did was to darken up the foreground to have a true silhouette.In my camera bag
My bag, more often than not, will contain my D800, a Nikon16-35mm f/4 and a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8.Feedback
The biggest advice I can give is to just get out there! The natural world has so many things to offer a photographer but if you don't get out into the world you can't capture the images it has to offer. I usually like to go into any shoots with some sort of plan or preconceived idea about what I'm looking for. The second piece of advice I can give is to have your plan but to also be flexible. The weather is ever changing and thus the types of shots you can take are always changing. Be patient and shoot using the best light you can.
