Seeing the beautiful natural soft light come inside from a glass door, I was fortunate to capture my dog staring at something outside being very still while she was observing. I noticed that the natural window light was perfectly placed on her, showing the detail and sparkle in her eye that made me grab my camera and get down to her level so I could capture her stare.

What a beautiful photo of Peppy!

Same photographer See all

Behind The Lens

Location
I took this photo in the glass doorway of my home
Time
It was taken in the afternoon
Lighting
The natural light coming through the doorway looked beautiful in her eyes, showing the reflection of the door itself. As she was looking out, barking at something, I took this opportunity to get my camera and only used this natural light coming in the house though the doorway to capture her in one of stares inbetween her barks. For me at that moment it was all for that beautiful light that naturally lit up her eyes. But the composition of her face in this photo was a close second to making this one of my favorite pet portraits!
Equipment
I just used my Canon 40D with 50mm prime lens and handheld my camera. That's it!
Inspiration
My dogs are always an inspiration to me and I have more photos of my dog than any other subject. I love getting any and every kind of capture I can with an animal because they can be unpredictable, enabling you to get a real candid shot. Although my dog is now fully aware of my camera and turns away now when I try to take her photo!
Editing
Just converted it to B&W only.
In my camera bag
My canon 7D. A 50mm prime (my favorite lens) and an 85mm prime lens and a wide angle lens.
Feedback
I love using mainly natural light for all my photos and the great part of being indoors on a bright day is that you can use window light and not be struggling with the harshness of that same light if you were taking portraits outside. Having the indoors shelter your subject from not getting harsh shadows but instead illuminating your subject with just the window light can really make all the difference. I would of never have gotten that gorgeous glint of light in her eye that was what truly what made this photo wonderful. So on bright days where you want to take portraits but can't avoid the bright midday sun, just use a window inside your home to capture a portrait with natural light! Using a flash would of ruined this intimate capture so I like to experiment with all natural light sources you can create.
