Behind The Lens

Location

In Ireland at my mother's old home made out of stones and had a thatch roof. It is now mostly crumbled to the ground over the years.

Time

This was taken in the early evening hours and I was behind a stone wall that gave me some nice shade on a windy day.

Lighting

I usually only use all natural light and I found this shaded area for better portrait lighting. It was perfect.

Equipment

I used a Canon 40D with no flash and a 17-55mm lens. I literally just held the camera with my two hands and as far from my face as possible because I did not have a tripod with me that day. I always make sure to capture a self portrait like this without looking like a typical selfie and make sure my arms, body and head is properly altered so it looks natural. I love wind in the hair photos so that was a bonus to capture and a candid shot in that one aspect.

Inspiration

I was visiting my mother's old home in Ireland and had photos of everyone else except of myself so I just turned the camera towards my face and right as I clicked my camera, the wind blew my hair around making beautiful shapes around my face.

Editing

I don't do much post processing on my photos but I added a little extra contrast and sharpening to enhance it. That's all!

In my camera bag

I have a Canon 40D and just this past year got a Canon 7D. I use mostly my 50 mm prime lens but for this photo I used my 17-55mm lens. I love my prime lens the most even though it can be more challenging to use due to having no zoom so I have to constantly move around to get the shot but I think it's worth it!

Feedback

For me, I like to just play around with my settings and depending on my mood or the effect I want for that particular photo, I just love adjusting my settings when I have the time to do so. I thought I would never want to go digital when I was using film camera's but now I can't imagine going back. The greatest part of the digital camera is to be able to see your images immediately and just keep on experimenting knowing what the outcome will be! Don't get me wrong, I still adore film but it is easier to use manual mode and be creative without wondering if the settings were just right.
