Frank Quinville House, Bodie, CA. 2010.
We were in the last tour group of the evening for the Frank Quinville House during the Bodie Heritage Festival. The sun was just dropping below the top of the Sierras and I loved the light coming into the room. The park ranger was preparing to lock up and I had the tripod set up to wait for everyone to leave the room. I asked the ranger if I could get a couple shots with everyone out. I took a bracketed series and the shutter was taking what seemed like forever on the last exposure (30 seconds). The ranger walked a foot or two into the doorway to see what was taking so long, stopping with his boot tip just visible beyond the door, shaking the whole floor, and casting a long shadow while the shutter was still open (which could have been a cool shot, but not what I wanted at the moment). I was praying it was dark enough that the shadow wouldn't affect the shot and the floor jiggling wouldn't blur it. Thankfully, it wasn't affected and I captured what I wanted to. The irony is that it was so dark you couldn't see the color in the room at the time. I had no idea the trim was painted this vibrant turquoise and the chair that neon green until I uploaded the photos later.
