Because our eyes and minds have been hardwired to identify patterns and relationships to help recognize the world around us, they can be fooled by images that contain patterns that don't occur in nature. The result is an optical illusion that makes us see something that isn't correct. This un-edited photo is one interesting and entertaining example of a flat roof, visually appearing to have waves.
The Bryce Inn, also known as the Bryce General Store, in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah was designed by architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood and built in 1932. It was the last major building designed by Underwood for the Utah Parks Company.
The roofs of Bryce Inn are finished with green cedar shingles in a wavy pattern. This hit-or-miss undulating roof pattern was developed elsewhere to artfully solve the problem of combining multiple units within a single structure (hiding roof graduations).
