Thomas Jefferson the cat (aka TJ) has a moment with a lamp.
I had been photographing a wedding all day the day before and was exhausted. While sitting on the couch at my friends' house, their cat swung by and was quite entranced by something in the lampshade. The thought of grabbing my heavy camera gear was nauseating, and I would have missed the moment. So I snapped him with my iPhone - and I'm *still* pleased with the photo.

I was sitting in the living room of some very close friends, and this was a side table next to the couch. It's that basic.Time
It was after dinner, it was Thanksgiving weekend, so it was dark out, and the lighting was low.Lighting
The minute I saw this cat illuminated by the lamp I knew I had to shoot it. That's all it is - lamplight.Equipment
My trusty old iPhone! I had photographed a wedding that weekend, but when this moment happened, I used what I had on-hand. Sometimes the best camera is the one that you have with you, as they say... I merely aimed at the kitty, tapped the highlights of the image to make sure the background disappeared and that the highlights wouldn't be totally blown out, and snapped the photo.Inspiration
TJ is a fine-looking, and incredibly sweet, kitty boy, named for Thomas Jefferson. My friends are animal-rescue advocates and this is one of many sweet animals they share their lives with. He is so pretty, and his blue eyes just looked perfect with the blue silk lampshade. I didn't even have time to consider grabbing another camera - I just whipped my phone out of my pocket and shot it, because it was just SO cute and so VERY catlike.Editing
A simple cropping, to remove some clutter from the table the cat and the lamp were sitting on.In my camera bag
My D800 (I have a back up D700), and my primary lens is my Nikon 50mm 1.4. I also have a Nikon 20mm 2.8 for landscapes, and a Nikon 80-400 for everything else. SB900 flash. Spare batteries, lots of memory, lens cleaning cloth. Bottle of water. I used to keep a Snickers bar (I still swear by them) but have switched to Kind bars, because less sugar. I also always have my iPhone handy, and occasionally a small tripod, depending on where I'm going. Step-up rings, CPL, and ND6 filters.Feedback
Don't miss a moment because you're running around trying to get your camera. Keep your phone handy, and learn to use the built-in camera! REALLY learn how to use it - there are also a lot of settings and things built right into your camera phone to help you improve your shots without even having to edit them after.
