One of the most amazing places I visited in Iceland was this ice cave in the Vatnajökull Glacier National Park. This park is home to one of the largest ice caps in Europe and the largest in Iceland, covering about 8% of the Country.
The amazing blue color of the ice is created by the increased density of the glacial ice. The oxygen and hydrogen rich ice absorbs most of the visible color, but reflects back the blues that you see in here. This is quite an amazing and awe inspiring sight.

Location
This photo was taken in Iceland at the Vatnajökull Glacier National Park. Even though I was at the cave in mid March, two days after taking this shot the rain and warmer weather made it inaccessible due to flooding.Time
The photo was taken around 8am in the morning.Lighting
The lighting on this shot was tricky with the backlit overcast sky coming in through the opening in the cave the ice was illuminated nicely, but the camera was having a hard time metering. I set the camera to do a bracket of 5 exposures at +/- 1 stop each.Equipment
For this shot I used my Nikon D810 and Nikon 20mm f/1.8 lens set on my tripod.Inspiration
I think it was the both the colors of the ice as well as the texture of the cave walls. The place was absolutely amazing. After a couple shots I decided the cave needed something to give it scale so I set up the shot with the bracketed shots, focused on a point where I would stand, set the timer and ran into place and waited for the bracketed shots to finish.Editing
The bulk of the post processing came in merging the 5 exposures in photomatix and getting it to look exactly the way it did to the naked eye. I also used CaptureOne to make some minor adjustments to the RAW files.In my camera bag
Probably the most important thing I never leave home without is my tripod. I'm shooting mostly with my Nikon D810 with either a Nikon 20mm f/1.8 or Sigma 35mm f/1.4. As I like to do a lot of long exposure shots around the water, I also carry a selection of filters. I've been using Lee Filters ND Grads, Singh Ray Reverse ND Grads as well as various other NDs and Polarizers. I've heard really good things about the Formatt HiTech Firecrest filters and how they have zero color cast, I'm really looking forward to trying those.Feedback
Again, I think the key to this shot was the bracketed exposures to handle the difficult lighting situation. Use of a tripod to keep the shot sharp was also very helpful, especially since I was taking the shot of myself as the subject. Using a subject to help give the cave scale made the photo for me. Although the cave, ice and colors are all very attractive, the size truly gets represented when it's given scale.
