Location
I took this photo in the Lofoten Islands of Norway during a three month visit.Time
This shot was taken around sunset, catching some of the last light of the day.Lighting
The lighting was coming from over my left shoulder, flooding the scene with soft warm light and lighting up the clouds above. To add a little interest to the clouds and to smoothen out the water a bit, I used a long exposure technique.Equipment
I took this photo on my Nikon D810, Tamron 15-30mm, and was using a Manfrotto carbon tripod.Inspiration
I had a vision for a photo that I wanted to capture as far as the scene with the snow and mountains. As I was staying in the area for about 3 months, I was able to visit this location on numerous occasions to get just the right conditions. The snow wasn't quite as fresh as I would have liked around the shore as the tide was receding.Editing
The post processing was fairly light on this photo, mostly bringing back the colors from the RAW photo, dodging/burning and some shadow and highlight adjustments. Looking back on this photo, I think I need to update the processing as I've learned quite a bit since this was taken! In my camera bag
Currently I find myself carrying mostly the same kit when I'm out traveling or backpacking through the mountains. I take my Nikon D850, Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8, Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8, Really Right Stuff TVC-24, DJI Mavic Pro, and various filters.Feedback
Hmm... I think patience and adaptability are key requirements for capturing an image like this. In my head I thought about the perfect image that I would like to have from this location. I visited this location many, many times during this trip and over the years I've visited the same location many more times looking for the perfect conditions. sometimes the stars will all align and those conditions will present themselves, sometimes you will have terrible conditions and sometimes you'll get most of the conditions you're chasing. For the latter, I think it's important to try and find a creative way to make the scene work to the best of your ability. Sometimes you might find that the image still comes up short of what you had envisioned, but other times you might be pleasantly surprised with an image that becomes something different altogether and possibly better than you could have envisioned. In these moments, it's important to keep yourself open and flexible to the unimaginable beauty that Mother Nature surprises us with so often.
