Behind The Lens

Location

At my home in Manchester, UK. Just behind the subject you can see my bedroom window !

Time

This was taken around 6pm in Spring.

Lighting

Well, as you can see the subject (Mica) is slightly backlit by the light coming through the window. In front of her are 2 4ft 4 bank fluorescent lights positioned in an upward angle because I didn't have stands and was just resting them on the floor against the wall. I had one on either side of me and you can see the highlights on either side of her cheeks.

Equipment

A 5d mark 3 and a 50mm, just the continuous lights I mentioned above and no tripod or flash.

Inspiration

Well Mica is a great friend of mine and when the new lights arrived I co-erced / forced her to endure a photo shoot with me whilst she was round. I even got her to throw water in her own face ! it was a lot of fun from where I was standing ;)

Editing

Hardly any, i'm not a huge fan of post processing, especially with portraits as I'm aware of the ethics surrounding it and how much of an effect that can have on people. I like to keep things as raw as possible, for this shot I just increased the white until just before they clipped and decreased the black just before they crushed, thats all !

In my camera bag

My Canon 5DS with usually a 50mm or 70-200mm. Those in combination work for pretty much any portrait project and lighting wise I use some studio flashes if it's in a studio but if not then I love natural light !

Feedback

Yeh, for these silly shots you really need to find a subject who's fun loving and not camera shy (unless your an amazing director). Then things can really flow and you can get little crazy !
