This photo is from a revisit to the Catholic Santuario behind Saint Antony's church located in the old ghost mining town of Fierro, New Mexico 88041. I have always found reverent inspiration upon looking at the magnificent art work of the plaster Pietà style sculpture that is displayed in this grotto like shrine. The detail found in both the Virgin Mary and Christ figures is awe-inspiring, and as with some of Michelangelo’s sculptures this statuary has Christ’s arm noticeably out of proportion (oversized) thus achieving a more visually appealing pyramidal structure.
Pietà is from the Latin pietas, "pity". Pietà as a theme in Christian art is always a depiction of the Virgin Mary supporting the body of the dead Christ. The Bible does not mention such a moment.

Wonderful and succinct your comment "Beautiful" and to think this grotto is open to the public 24/7 (no locks and no people gaurding) all year long, turly almost unheard of in this day and age. Thanks for the "Top Choice" peer recognition.

Brings tears to my eyes , the passion of the Christ , oh how Mary suffered for her deep love of her son , as most Mothers suffer today with their children , some going off to war , some into addictions , the love a mother has for her child , is right here , captured in this most beautiful photo . And the love and unbearable pain , jesus bore for us all ...Thankyou

So many feel the same as you when looking at this composition. I had copies made and gave them to everyone who wanted one at Church one Sunday. Months later people would tell me about how they appreciated it and how they displayed it etc...
