Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in the Leith Valley in Dunedin, NZ. I had heard there were waterfalls around the area and wanted to nail a lush looking shot that shows off the iconic New Zealand bush.

Time

After a long walk to the waterfall the daylight was starting to fade, making a nice even lit composition. I often like shooting in the lower softer light of the evenings.

Lighting

This shot didn't need any artificial lighting, the fading light of the evening made the light nice and even, with a slight mystical feel.

Equipment

This shot was taken on my well used canon 600D, using my tokina 11-16mm lens at 14mm.

Inspiration

I had been traveling around New Zealand and really wanted to take a shot that shows off the New Zealand bush. There are lots of waterfalls around New Zealand, but I wanted to combine the bush and waterfall together, Leith Valley was the perfect mix.

Editing

This shot requires very little work, I slightly increased the contrast and cropped it so it was level, as the shot was originally taken on a fallen branch. Other than a slight vignette addition this shot remained as is.

In my camera bag

My bag always has my tokina 11-16mm, my tamron 70-300 for my wildlife shots and of course the canon 50mm prime for the faster shots. I also have one or two ND filters for some longer shutter speeds, especially with water.

Feedback

As there are so many waterfalls and waterfall shots, my advice is to not be afraid of getting a little bit wet, and put yourself in positions that may not have been shot before. I always take a few shots from nice and close to the water and some from higher up, I find that changing your perspective allows you to see more potential in other shots.
