Taken on a very rainy day. Rather than braving the weather I decided to try and shoot something I hadn't done before. The addition of some better lighting equipment may follow in the future, as this was shot with natural back light and a phone flashlight app.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Auckland, New Zealand, in my outdoor garage bedroom. I had just arrived in New Zealand and rented a small room in the garage to start setting myself up.

Time

During a a pretty large downpour I decided to try and photography through the window, in the end I brought the plants closer to the door.

Lighting

This was lit with just a smart phone torch. At the time I didn’t own any lighting equipment, so I made do with what I had in my room.

Equipment

The camera was the canon 600d, showing it age slightly.

Inspiration

Listening to a storm in my room and seeing the rain pour down the windows, motivated me to try and create something at the time.

Editing

Very little post-processing was used as I understood only small adjustments at the time. So a bump up in contrast and saturation, plus a little adjustments of the tones.

In my camera bag

I still have the 600d, though I’m desperate to upgrade now. I also have the canon 50mm 1.8, the kit lens (18-55), tokina 11-16 2.8, and the tamron 70-300, my go to wildlife lens.

Feedback

Relax and just play around with a torch to see what lighting effects you like, you can bring out more texture and change the feeling of the image with just angling the light in a slightly different way.
