I always follow the same belief of never taking a photograph but making it with those that trust me, when I am holding my camera. This was a moment that happened. I watch. I am patient and this moment came between these two people. We were doing a shoot in my back yard studio...privately..alone..(other than HMUA) .without any pre definitions of what would happen.Time
It was that time of day when you gotten rid of the ugly midday light. We'd been shooting for a while. We were waiting on the beautiful golden hour...and yet there came this light. With its gentle contrast. Timing is everything.Lighting
Well...not really...because...me...I'm a natural light girl primarily anyway. So i am constantly watching how the highlights and shadows fall...watching when the clouds make it flat but begin to move..and they often move fast so I have to catch just before the high key hits in.Equipment
I'm hand held all the way unless on major wides incorporating large numbers of subjects. I shoot wide open which means I have to be specific with focus. I used a Nikon D800 and my favorite lens 105mm.Inspiration
the honesty of the moment.Editing
I am old school. I was film all the way until economics forced me to turn to digital. I treat digital as I did film. I try to everything in camera. I hate sitting in front of a computer. I use photoshop only as I would in a darkroom. Contrast/ dodge and burn. I never crop. I do that in camera. This image....i did nothing. HIn my camera bag
Given that you can't fix a digital body with a nail file like my old hasselblads....I carry two bodies..my old Nikon and my sony A7R ii...three prime lenses. 35mm, 50mm, 85mm all F1,4 because I love to shoot wide open and the zeiss glass is amazing for me. I always have multiple memory cards...if one gets viruses you're screwed. other than that...i use a movie viewfinder to look at the light. plenty of wipes and lense cleaner so the lens is always clean and an old polaroid camera. tripod i will bring in case...and always a ladder/ apple boxes...because point of view is important to me....as well as pop up reflectors....I love to bend the light...and shadows.Feedback
sorry if not specific...but for me...its about taking the time to make sure you watch who or what you are shooting. breathe...don't feel pressured and if you panic...allow the image to find you instead of chasing it. Plus I always use music to set the mood rather pose to much. I feel that it is worth taking the time to watch and follow their natural rhythm ....I will step in to adjust a hand etc...(hands hold the most tension...but other than that I love authenticity...but that is me..70% of my time is making sure my clients are comfortable and enjoying their time...that is when the magic happens. And it happens fast so you better be ready because that is OUR JOB.
