Since both of my grandfathers were lobster fishermen and I grew up on Cape Cod; this is a very familiar sight.

Location
On a deck at a friend's BBQ...Time
The grill was cranked up in late afternoon...Lighting
Although it was a sunny summer day, the deck and BBQ grill were in shade.Equipment
Since I was just visiting friends for the day, I only carried my Nikon D5100 with a Nikon 28-105 zoom...ISO set at 200, aperture f/5.6, shutter 1/125, lens at 50mm.Inspiration
As the clams began to heat up and open, the fire brought out color and detail in what began as a collection of bland white shells. Their texture and color were my driving force, as well as the clams' random pattern on the grill.Editing
My first step was a slight crop. The second was to build contrast which would eliminate detail in the grill making the clams appear to float, and at the same time make the shell color more vibrant. In my camera bag
The situation of friends getting together was casual, so there was no need to carry anything more than the camera.Feedback
One huge factor that separates the "point & shoot" from the artist is one's ability to see beyond just using the camera as a recording device. The creative process begins by discovering what makes the subject special. Start by thinking in terms of: color, texture, pattern, shape, and form.
