Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a meadow near my house.

Time

Late afternoon as shadows began to fall.

Lighting

I prefer shooting flowers in natural light. When shadows fall behind the subject, the subject stands out.

Equipment

Shot with a Nikon D5200, lens: Nikon 55-300

Inspiration

Inspiration comes from the beauty of nature---most importantly: the form, texture, shape, pattern, and color of flowers.

Editing

The original color photo seemed to me a perfect portrait, but I found something special in the shape and texture and pattern of this flower that suggested a conversion to B&W.

In my camera bag

Depending on project, I try to carry light...in the case of flowers I will only carry one camera and lens, along with my trusty tripod.

Feedback

I see flowers in terms of people portraits. Eliminate busy, distracting backgrounds; especially spectral highlights or any bright areas that draw the eyes away from the subject...or anything else in the composition that distracts from the subject (like other [out of focus] flowers). If a flower group, look for symmetry in the relationships---avoid chaos. I recommend shooting Aperture-preferred and changing aperture for each composition in order to change the depth-of-field (depth of sharpness). Change exposures (bracket). Take your tripod. Tripod is what takes "good" to "great".
