Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture alongside a small country road near my home in Kentucky.

Time

Early morning.

Lighting

Morning light from the side, or behind can make the dew on the web glisten and show up better in the photo.

Equipment

Nikon D90 camera with a Nikkor 18-105mm lens.

Inspiration

Early morning is magical... the light creates a fairy land of things that are invisible the rest of the time. I love to walk along the road and in the fields next to my home and see the spiderwebs glisten with dew in the morning sun. I have always liked spiders; they fascinate me. I am amazed watching how they weave their webs. I do my best to capture their magic with photos...

Editing

No post processing on this one.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D90 camera, Nikkor 18-105mm lens, cleaning cloth, spare battery, several SD cards, and a couple filters (circular polarizer to erase reflections/enhance colors, and .9 neutral density to slow down water movement).

Feedback

I have heard individuals say how difficult it is for them to get a spiderweb to show up in a photograph. I would suggest they slowly walk around the web until they find the spot where the web glistens in the light (early morning is best as the light is better and there is normally dew on the web). Then, frame the shot making sure you see that through the camera lens. Voila! I would also suggest using manual focus to get the web/spider in focus as desired. Pay attention also to your background... you want the spider to stand out. Play with different settings...a portrait setting for example will make the background soften. Another thing to consider is a way to keep the camera steady. If your hands aren't steady enough, use a tripod. Luckily, spiders usually hold still long enough to get a nice shot.
