Behind The Lens

Location

I took the photo in my parent's backyard in Somerset, Kentucky. There is always something blooming in their yard, and it had just stopped raining. I love taking photos after a rain, especially raindrops on flowers.

Time

This was taken on June 27, 2015 at 12:30 in the afternoon.

Lighting

Natural Lighting was used. I have to admit it was a total accident that the reflections of the flowers showed up in the raindrops. It was after a rain, and the sun had come out... other than that there isn't much to tell. I was taking photos and noticed the reflections and tried my best to capture it. I still feel I didn't do it justice.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D90 camera with an 18-105mm lens that was bundled with it when purchased. Natural lighting (no flash) was used. I believe I did end up using a tripod.

Inspiration

I like taking photos after a rain and love to capture the way they reflect in the sunlight. I had always admired photos that captured a reflection in a raindrop. It was by chance I noticed the reflections in the raindrops on the amaryllis.

Editing

I post-processed a bit in Lightroom increasing sharpness, clarity, and luminance and cropped it to showcase the raindrops a bit better.

In my camera bag

Sometimes I don't even bother with a bag. I just fling the camera over my shoulder with a charged battery and empty memory card and I'm good to go. However, when I do take my bag there are cleaning cloths, a spare battery and several memory cards tucked inside.

Feedback

I wish I could tell you exactly how to replicate the experience but it was by accident I came across it. I would suggest taking a look after a rain when the sun comes out and try looking at the raindrops from several different angles to see if reflections appear. I'm pretty new to technique and am still learning, and a lot of what I learn is by happy accidents and following my gut feelings :) The settings on this photo were: Aperture: f/8; ISO: 200; Exposure: 1/180; Focal Length: 1050/10. Happy shooting!
