Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Eagle Falls, which is located within the Cumberland Falls State Resort Park in Corbin, Kentucky.

Time

The time of the photo was early evening around 7:00pm.

Lighting

The sun was positioned opposite from the falls as it lowered in the early evening sky, and highlighted the falls beautifully.

Equipment

I did not use a tripod for this photo. My vantage point was a large rock positioned close by where I was able to climb upon it and sit with my camera (a Nikon D90) balanced against one knee. I find tripods rather awkward when climbing for a vantage point and was thrilled there wasn't a need for one in this instance.

Inspiration

One of my greatest passions is hiking to waterfalls and photographing them.

Editing

I use Adobe Lightroom to make minor adjustments when needed.

In my camera bag

I don't like feeling restricted with a lot of equipment so most of the time I don't utilize a bag. Also, I end up taking my camera out of the bag all the time anyway, so I usually just carry my Nikon D90 with a 18-105mm lens (and just stick a lens cleaning pen or cloth in my pocket along with a spare SD card). My vantage points usually make a tripod a bit clunky to maneuver as well, so I just usually make due with whatever is handy if the need arises when I don't have one handy.

Feedback

Paying attention to where the sun sets and rises in regard to the waterfall is key, giving a better idea of what time of day would be best for photographing. Play with different vantage points and exposure speeds. In this instance I didn't have to do a lot of adjustments to make the water movement blur because the sunlight was decreasing and the water movement was fast. However, the most important thing to remember is not to get caught up in the technicalities so much that just being present in the moment is forgotten.
