Early morning just as the sun is risingLighting
I like to let the morning sun do all the work. Wait if necessary for the rising sun to find its place in the sky where the light will showcase your subject. Just don't wait too long however, the frost will melt quickly once it is kissed by the sun...Equipment
I used a Nikon D90 with a 18-105mm lens. I used a tripod to keep the details sharp.Inspiration
I noticed one morning (too late) that there were the remnants of frost on the roses in the yard (the first frost had come early the night before). I started thinking this would be an awesome photo opportunity, and I hoped there would be another occurrence while the roses were still healthy. I started getting up at first light to check for frost, and one morning soon after I had another opportunity. I grabbed my camera and tripod and spent the morning in an attempt to capture one of the most beautiful sights I've ever seen as the morning sun made the roses glow and the frost sparkle like diamonds.Editing
This photo is straight from the camera; I didn't even crop it!In my camera bag
I carry a cleaning cloth, extra battery and memory cards along with my camera and lens. I don't usually carry a tripod with me unless I know I will need it beforehand.Feedback
On this photo the aperture was f/5.6 (I wanted the background to be soft so the rose would stand out), ISO 400, and Exposure 10/1250. I usually use auto focus on the part I want clearest (the frost) but I will manually adjust if needed to get the detail desired. I also used a tripod to keep it clear.
