Location
I took this photo in my garage.Time
Dead of night to ensure a pitch black environment.Lighting
I used a black light flashlight to provide the glow from beneath the helmet and the sparks provided the rest of the lighting.Equipment
I used a Canon 7D EOS with a 17-85mm lens on a tripod.Inspiration
I'm a Star Wars geek and have lots of collectible helmets. This one was sort of older and beat up so I decided to experiment with the grinder and sparks to see what kind of effect I might get on camera.Editing
I did some level and exposure adjustments in Lightroom but this is pretty close to what I captured. In my camera bag
Canon 7D, 17-85mm lens, 70-300mm lens, macro lens, cleaning materials, tripodFeedback
With sparks you need to experiment with the manual controls to ensure you get the long trails shown here. My settings here were Aperture: f/3.5, ISO: 200, Exposure: 25/10. Using a tripod and handheld shutter trigger was key as well.
