Behind The Lens

Location

This is a composite image. The background was taken at a local park and the subject was actually photographed in my driveway with a black backdrop setup.

Time

You wouldn't think it by looking at this image but it was taken around early afternoon. It was taken with all natural light and a pretty overcast day which helped diffuse the light as well.

Lighting

This is a self portrait and in particular is one of my favorites because it allowed me to make some great memories with my brother (playing the role of the hands), and my mom who is always willing to be my assistant. It was only my second composite ever and to this day I'm still very proud of it :)

Equipment

The subject was taken with a Nikon d40, on a Manfrotto tripod, using a remote control trigger. The background was taken just using my Nikon d40, with a standard lens. I'm a form believer that it's not the equipment that makes the image, but the artist behind it.

Inspiration

This image is from a series I had done called "Nightmare". I wanted the images to be able to tell a story when put together but also be during enough to stand on their own and I feel I really accomplished that.

Editing

This is a combination of at least 20 images. The background is one solid image which was altered to look more like it was photographed at dusk. The main subject is all one image except for the cloak which was a combination of many different images you get the desired effect. Then of course the arms/branches were all separate images. Contrast was boosted and texture was also added to the image to give it more depth.

In my camera bag

I usually keep things pretty simple. My camera and standard lens are always on me. I also keep my remote handy and lots of SD cards, an extra battery and battery charger. I also keep cleaning supplies as well.

Feedback

When creating composites, it's always easier for me if I sketch up my ideas first. I normally try to photograph all the images needed but if you don't have access to the idea you have, there are limitless stock photographs out there to use. Just remember to pay attention to the direction of the light on the subjects and to always ground them with shadows!
