Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Versailles in Marie-Antoinette's Estate in the kitchen area.

Time

I took this photo in the middle of the day but the light coming through the window and bareness of the walls made it a natural for a conversion to black & white.

Lighting

I got lucky to be in the room at about midday. The sun light was high up and able to come directly through the window and light the room as you see it. I wish the lamp had been lit.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100 with an 18-135 zoom lens. My ISO was sent at 800, f-3.5 and a shutter speed of 1/60. This was a hand held shot.

Inspiration

The kitchen area of the estate had bare walls with only two windows mounted high up near the ceiling. There was nothing on the walls except the texture and age. The entire scene was perfect for a dark moody black & white image. I could see this image in my head when I took the photo.

Editing

I shoot in RAW and then process in Lightroom and Photoshop. I used Silver Efex Pro to convert the color image to B&W. I also used to Photoshop to enhance the light from the window and the window light on the floor.

In my camera bag

I have recently moved from the Nikon D7100 to the Nikon Z7. I have all of my old lenses as well as the new 24-70/4S lens and the FTZ adapter. My usual lenses are the 18-135 zoom, 60mm macro, and a 70-300mm zoom. I also have 2 Manfrotto tripods. One large one for interior work and a smaller lighter one for travel.

Feedback

Try and "see" your image in your head first. Then use the tools - the camera, lens, light, post processing - to achieve your vision. I have found the process to be much more rewarding if you have your image in your head first.
