Behind The Lens

Location

This is the Arc de Triumph in Paris, France.

Time

Around 8:00pm at sunset.

Lighting

This photo was taken on the east side of the Arc looking west. I planned this shot out before hand and got luck with an excellent sunset.

Equipment

I have a Nikon D-7100, Nikkor 18-135mm 1:3.5-5.6 zoom lens for most of my work. I also have a Nikkor 70-300mm and an 80-400mm lens. I use a Nikon SB-800 Speedlight flash and a Manfrotto 055MF4 tripod with a 3265 joystick head.

Inspiration

Well, I was in Paris. What more inspiration does a photographer need? After all, it is the City of Light. I did give this shot some consideration before I took it. I wanted a sunset shot of the Arc with lights from the traffic in the foreground. I just waited for cars to come by and provide the light.

Editing

This was originally a group of four images combined to produce a color HDR image. The color image looked overdone and artificial. The B&W image turned out to be more dramatic. I used Photomatix for the HDR and SilverEfex Pro for the B&W.

In my camera bag

I have a Nikon D-7100, Nikkor 18-135mm 1:3.5-5.6 zoom lens for most of my work. I also have a Nikkor 70-300mm and an 80-400mm lens. I use a Nikon SB-800 Speedlight flash and a Manfrotto 055MF4 tripod with a 3265 joystick head.

Feedback

When taking a photo of a well-known landmark give it some thought before you get there. Envision your image in your head. Then use your camera and your skill to produce that image in your head and put it on paper.
