Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside Breckenridge, Colorado in 2011 near Blue Lakes. It was about a mile up the mountain all on foot. But well worth the hike.

Time

Around noon.

Lighting

Natural light without filters.

Equipment

Nikon D200, 18-135 zoom lens, Manfrotto 055MF4 tripod with a 3265 joystick head.

Inspiration

I've always liked time exposures of waterfalls. They make for much more dramatic images.

Editing

This was originally a group of four images combined to produce a color HDR image. The color image looked overdone and artificial. The B&W image turned out to be more dramatic. I used Photomatix for the HDR and SilverEfex Pro for the B&W.

In my camera bag

I have a Nikon D-7100, Nikkor 18-135mm 1:3.5-5.6 zoom lens for most of my work. I also have a Nikkor 70-300mm and an 80-400mm lens. I use a Nikon SB-800 Speedlight flash and a Manfrotto 055MF4 tripod with a 3265 joystick head. I have a LowPro backpack that can carry all my gear. It even has a collapsible holster for my tripod as well as a waterproof rain cover. It has an easily accessible outer pocket for airline tickets and passport. I always carry my camera gear with me on planes because I don’t want to leave my expensive gear with the baggage handlers. I don’t use a laptop when I travel. I bring all my photos home and download them onto my computer. I suppose one day I’ll get a laptop.

Feedback

I usually find an interesting photo in a book or magazine and then try and dissect it and determine how the photographer was able to create the image. I then try to incorporate those techniques into my images. There's nothing wrong with learning from someone else.
