Really unique and creative shot. I love the shapes and textures of the water, and the golden reflection of the sun.

Fabulous, bravo! :)

Behind The Lens

Location

View from the small hotel on the rim of the volcanic crater. Santorini, Greece.

Time

Just before sunset.

Lighting

I exposed for the sun on the water so as to not blow out the highlights

Equipment

Nikon D70. The camera failed about a week later while in northwestern Greece. Had to go all the way back to Athens to get it fixed. Even then, it only worked for about another week. Good reason why to bring a backup.

Inspiration

The S curve of the boat in the light of the setting sun.

Editing

Lightroom. Minor sharpening and bringing out the shadows a bit.

In my camera bag

In 2017, I converted to a Sony mirrorless, crop sensor system after using a Nikon system since 2004. Mainly to lessen the weight. I now carry a Sony a6500 and a6600. Will soon be adding a Sony a7RIV (full-frame). Lens include the following but I usually limit to carrying 3 lens for most short outings and even month-long foreign trips since I do not check my bags at the airport: Sony 10-18 f4, Zeiss 16-70 f4, Sigma 30mm f1.4, Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8, Sony 18-200 f3.5 to 6.3, Sony G Lens 70-300mm f4.5 to 5.6, Sony G Lens 90mm Macro f2.8. Markens Q3 (Arca Swiss-type) ball head on a Gitzo Traveler GT 1541T carbon fibre tripod. Lots of extra batteries and 64 Gb SD cards, battery charger, L-bracket for mounting camera to tripod, sensor cleaning supplies, rocket blaster for initial dusting of sensor prior to using wands to clean the sensor. Laptop loaded with Adobe Lightroom, with card reader.

Feedback

Wait for the light. Always wait for the light. If at all possible, and you are not shooting rapidly changing urban street scenes, use a tripod. It will slow you down and cause you to examine your setup more critically. This cuts down on post-production editing. The reason why I chose the tripod that I did is it fits inside my backpack that I live out of on long trips.
