This photo was taken in my back garden on a bright, sunny day.Time
It was early afternoon when I noticed the strong sunlight through this particular poppy head making it wonderfully transparent, almost like tissue paper.Lighting
I needed to isolate this particular flower head with the bright sun directly behind it so I needed to kneel down to get the correct angle.Equipment
I used my Nikon D90 DSLR with Nikkor 18-105 mm lens. No other equipment – natural sunlight only.Inspiration
When I stroll down my garden I try to observe two things: any photographic opportunities and what gardening work needs to be done. On this occasion I was totally focused on the effect the strong sunlight had on the thin petals of the poppies and dashed indoors for my camera.Editing
Only a minimum amount of sharpening since the Nikkor lens has a soft effect when shot in raw.In my camera bag
Nowadays I always carry my Nikon D7100 DSLR with the 18-105 Nikkor lens plus a Nikkor 70-300mm telephoto lens. I like to travel light and only take a tripod if I think I'm going to take a long exposure. I prefer to keep my photography clean and simple.Feedback
My only obvious piece of advice is to be aware of your surroundings and train your eyes to look at everything in great detail. Even the simplest objects, plants, creatures, weather have the potential to become magical under special circumstances. The trick is to be there at the right time and not miss the shot.
