Location
This was taken at the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Southern ColoradoTime
This was taken during the fall at around 4pm as the sun was headed toward the horizon, thus the reason for the deep shadow.Lighting
The natural light was perfect for this shot as the sun cast this dark shadow just below the top of the dune.Equipment
at the time, I believe i was using a Canon 60D. with a Canon 70-200mm L series lens. No flash or tripod were used.Inspiration
First, the Sand Dunes are an amazing place for photography. Every time i am there, the dune field changes which allows me to shoot the same dunes from different perspectives. When i was there on this trip the sky was was a perfect Blue and this particular dune had a white tint with a very dark shadow. It was amazing to see in person and was so glad the picture was able to reflect what i saw in person.Editing
the post processing was removing the digital noise from from the shadow. In my camera bag
I now carry a Canon 70D with multiple lens, my favorite being the Canon 70-200mm L series lensFeedback
Again, the Great Sand Dunes National Park is a great place to photograph, the best times to shoot are early morning or late evening when the shadows really make the Dune field pop. Be patient and be willing to walk the dunes. Because shadows change constantly you need to be ready to find that perfect shot. Dont be afraid to lay in the sand as you can also get some great macro shots. Plan to stay for a few hours and shoot as many pics as you can. There are so many different angles to shoot from daily.
