Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at my home makeshift studio in the living room.

Time

The photo was taken sometime in the afternoon, however it's indoors so time of day doesn't really matter.

Lighting

The lighting was very interesting, I had two Canon 580ex2 speedlights behind the white see through pieces of plastic and also behind the model. In the front I had an Alienbee's ringflash to light the front of the model.

Equipment

I used a 5Dmark2 with the 24-105mm F4 lens as well as two 580ex2 speedlights for the background light and an Alien Bees ringlight on the camera to light the model.

Inspiration

I wanted to create a type of diffused light using the light plastic panels that are usually in offices to diffuse the ceiling light created by fluorescent tubes. I went out and bought 3 of those panels and then rigged them so they can be used as a background for a model sitting down and I can shoot my flashes through them. They also give a very interesting texture to the background as well. The model herself decided on the pose, and I gave her the sword and hat to make her look Asian as well as the black fabric to make it look more seductive since she's partially covered and not fully nude. The floor has silver paper on it to both reflect the flash from the front as well as give her an interesting texture to sit on.

Editing

I usually don't do much post processing on my photos at all, just basic correction of contrast, colours, brightness etc...

In my camera bag

It really depends on the type of photo shoot I am doing, if it's just for street photography then usually one camera and one or two lenses. If it's an actual photo shoot set up then again one camera and probably 2-3 lenses and flashes as well as flash modifiers, reflectors and other gear.

Feedback

Experiment with light, think of different ways to bend light and think of interesting backgrounds even if you are indoors, you can go to your local hardware store and purchase all kinds of interesting materials to make some cool backgrounds, and remember light always bounces off reflective items such as metal or even cardboard that has a metallic sheen to it.
