Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at an aquarium in Kamogawa, Japan. The penguin was just floating there looking at the people walking by outside.

Time

This was taken in the afternoon inside the aquarium so it's not really important what time of day it was.

Lighting

It uses the indoor lights in the aquarium which is lit from above as well as some small lights inside the penguin enclosure and pool which are lighting the subject from below.

Equipment

This was shot with the Canon Eos M and the 22mm f2.0 lens.

Inspiration

I saw many penguins moving and swimming in the enclosure but this one penguin was just kind of floating around and looking at us the viewers from time to time, he would just stare out of the window at us so I quickly decided to get the shot.

Editing

I have only done some cropping and adjusting the contrast and colors a bit, most of the shot was made in the camera.

In my camera bag

I travel light so if it's a specific place I'm visiting such as a museum or aquarium or zoo I just take my Canon Eos M mirrorless camera (yes, the first one in the line) and the 22mm f2.0 lens that comes with it. If I'm doing some kind of landscape travel to another city or area I take my Canon 80D with me and the 24-105mm f4 L lens as well as the Rokinon 8mm fisheye lens. If I'm doing a model photoshoot then I'll use my Canon 5Dmk3 as well as the previous two lenses and maybe another lens as well, plus a couple of lightspeed flashes.

Feedback

You have to be open to getting good shots at the aquariums and zoos of the world, but you shouldn't bring a huge set up like a DSLR with many lenses, you will have to act fast to get the shot and not change a lot of settings, so a smaller camera or even a smartphone might be enough. You should keep the camera ready at all times in your hand while you're walking around the area and get ready to shoot at a moment's notice!!!
