I took this photo in Pistoia (Toscana, Italy) This is a small town near Florence. Pistoia is not so famous as Florence, however it's a very pretty town with a lot of beautiful monuments and not so crowded as Florence. I liked walk in the street, quietly, taking time to watch everything. These arches are on the side of the main square.Time
It was in the afternoon. The sun was going down, enough for good light and shadows.Lighting
I was very interested by the contrast between light, shadows and shapes. I stood on the side to amplify the movement : large shapes before then decreasing. Use black and white photo increases this effect. it magnifies the noble and almost austere aspect of the monument.Equipment
I used my new NikonZ7 II, a wonderful camera with a Nikkor Z 50 mm f 1/8 lense. Together, the camea and the lense give a perfect definition. I'm very happy with this equipment.Inspiration
The noble monument inspired me and and I wanted to lead the gaze to the small niche at the bottom of the stage. we guess that it is a religious element as there are many in Italy, but the niche is in the shade and this creates a beautiful mysterious effect that forces the viewer to seek what it is. This creates a whole: shadow, mystery light, nobility, a true story.Editing
I amplified the contrast and the sharpness. I like do that most of the time, specially with a black and white photography. In my camera bag
I have the Nikon Z7 II, the 50 mm lense, and I I have kept my Nikkor 70 - 200 mm vr II, awonderful zoom that i use with the FTZ adaptator. I always take a tripod with me..... in case. I always use a polarizing filter and sometimes some ND filters for long exposure.Feedback
I'm not the first to say that light is the most important thing for a good photo. So, look at carefully how use the light. I'm very demanding about composition and sometime I move a lot before choosing the best place for an interesting composition. Look at the contrast (colors, shapes, etc) Always look around you, the best photo is sometime hidden. Look at up, down, on the sides, there are a lot of opportunity a little invisible at first glance.
