Location
This photo was taken at the Audobon Bird Rookery in Venice, Florida. The Rookery itself is a little island in a big pond, around which bird watchers and photographers can walk at a safe distance without upsetting the profuse number of great blue herons, egrets, cormorants, green herons, and other nesting birds.Time
My son and I drove up from Fort Myers to check on the progress of the birds, which I had last seen a month before. We arrived around late morning.Lighting
Because the Rookery island is rocky, but the land and pond around it was low and flat, I wanted to be careful to avoid full sun, or backlighting.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon PowerShot Sx60 HS, with a 23mm-1353mm lens. I also relied on a monopod for camera stabilization.Inspiration
I wanted to photograph a mature Great Blue Heron at this Rookery site. Great Blues have always seemed like my totem bird!Editing
I do very limited post processing. I shoot in jpeg, and rely on Windows 10's limited photo gallery tools to crop, brighten, darken, or sharpen images. Rather than making the photo the best it can be artistically, I aim to make it the closest to what I see through the viewfinder: what I see is what you get!In my camera bag
I always carry my trusted Canon PowerShot SX60 HS. A n extra memory card, lens cloth and a couple of extra charged batteries round it out for me.Feedback
Florida is a wonderful state for birding, and water bodies here draw scores of large and small birds!
