Location
I was at the Naples zoo, walking around in their botanical garden. I saw this young Blue Heron chick in its nest, guarded by a parent. I angled the shot so that no fencing or signage would be visible.Time
This was taken in mid-afternoon, when a lot of the zoo's visitors were still preoccupied with the other animals and exhibits. I had this chick all to myself!Lighting
The area was in light shade.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon PowerShot SX50HS. The camera was handheld, without flash, filters, or post production processing.Inspiration
I wanted to get the quirky appearance of this Blue Heron chick, who looked like he was having a "bad hair day!" The chick was a far cry from the sleek feathered adult Blue Heron who stood behind him.Editing
NoIn my camera bag
I always carry my primary camera, now a Canon PowerShot SX60HS. Extra charged batteries, my camera manual, and a special lens cleaning cloth round out my bag contents.Feedback
Keep your eyes open and your camera with you at all times - there are lots of elements of visual surprise.
