Some of the early Pueblo people developed the skills including brick masonry to build homes in naturally formed hollows found on the sides of steep cliffs in the desert southwestern US. This particular site at Mesa Verde in Colorado was occupied for over 600 years beginning in the late 1190s.
Over a hundred and fifty rooms were created at this site, many of which were constructed on top of each other. They used stepping stones and wooden ladders both to scale the cliff face and to reach the upper rooms.
