While most aspens in Colorado’s San Juan mountains are in full color right now we did encounter many patches, some of them quite large, where significant numbers of trees had already lost their leaves. In addition to spreading from seed aspens frequently spread via a common dense root system that creates patches of genetically identical trees. Each stand of identical trees behaves independently of other stands resulting in different timings when their leaves are lost as well as affecting the variations in color, some being more golden yellow and some more orangish.
