Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot on top of Mount Evans in Colorado. It may be the most intense drive a person will ever make! it's also a challenge to drive look for wildlife and then glance over the edge. The Adults were intensely foraging for mineral so the kids would play!

Time

It was early to mid-afternoon.

Lighting

They were at 14000ft as they played so it was cold with intensely strong light. Even though it was mid-day I tried to stay on the sunny side of them as much I could to keep from too much shadowing

Equipment

Nikon D500 with a Nikkor 200-500mm zoom lens on a monopod

Inspiration

Its been a summer a lot of opportunities to capture images of babies, they were everywhere. So I was hoping for a Dad or two, the babies kept me pretty entertained for quite a while

Editing

I shoot in raw, and I kind of have a process I go through. I use Lightroom for file management, but I do all the editing in photoshop many just because of old habits I guess. A camera can only do so much so when I shoot something I then come back and edit things in a way to bring back what I am seeing in my mind.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D500, D750 and 2 D7200 all with battery grips. Tamron SP AF 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II LD, Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2, Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 DI USD, Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D, Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR Lens, Nikon 180mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF NIKKOR. Nikkor 200-500mm Zoom. I also carry 8 100X150 ND filters for Landscapes. 3 carbon fiber tripods and a monopod.

Feedback

Photographers can get touch about saying they get lucky. The thing is to get outstanding wildlife shots you have to get lucky, animals don't do things on cue. So it takes a lot of time, preparation, patience and lots of time out shooting to get yourself into a situation to get lucky. Then it takes knowledge and skill to capitalize on the moments when they happen. I shot 25000 images over a month of shooting on the road and put myself into a situation that I saw some amazing things. I spent a couple of hours watching these young mountain goats do their thing and 1000's of images to get something cool.
