Location
This photo was taken at Friesian Connection near Door, MI. Every year Friesian Connection has an open house to showcase these beautiful animals. I was in the barn. You can see by the catchlights that it was a bright day outside.Time
I arrived a little early to the show to get this photo, around 11 a.m. The owners are friends and let me in the barn to get some close ups.Lighting
I only used natural indirect light coming in through a window and barn doors.Equipment
This photo was taken with a Canon 7D Mark II, with a EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM. I shot wide open to blur the foreground and background.Inspiration
I love taking pictures of Friesian horses. They are such magnificent animal. I have many more shots of them in my portfolio.Editing
I sharpen all my photos in Lightroom. I also, bump the shadows a bit to reveal the silky coat of these dark horses. That is about all the post-processing I had to do to this photo, besides cropping for optimum composition. In my camera bag
I carry two Canon bodies: 1DX and 7D Mark II; five Canon lens: 70-200mm 2.8f, 24-70mm 2.8f, 16-35mm 2.8f, 100mm macro 2.8f, and 85 mm 1.2f; 1 Gitzo tripod with a Really Right Stuff BH40 ball head mounted.Feedback
Look for crops that fill the frame and emphasize your subject. In this photo, I wanted to capture the glassy eyes of this wonderful animal. By shooting wide open (2.8) and getting relatively close to the eye and leaving a little distance to the background, the eye pops with clarity, while everything else is out of focus.
