Thanks for the comment, Nature had a major part in putting up such a stunning sunset for me to photograph.

Behind The Lens

Location

This Photo was taken at a HYATT resort in Carmel Highlands California overlooking the Pacific Ocean

Time

It was sunset and the light and clouds were shifting, and it allowed me to take multiple images.

Lighting

I had never seen a cloud formation like this. It was constantly changing. By the time it reached this point I decided to include the tree.

Equipment

D810 with 24-120 f-4 VR lens @ 24mm, f-8, 1-80, ISO 1800. Handheld Manual Mode Auto ISO

Inspiration

I had never seen a cloud formation like this before. The mixture of blue sky, puffy clouds and deep red and yellow colors near the horizon really made this image pop.

Editing

Processed in PSCS6 Extended with Picture Postcard Workflow. I learned this process through reading Dan Margilis books first Photoshop LAB Color first and second additions and then his modern Photoshop Color Workflow. Much of the post processing is done in LAB space which is supported by Photoshop. Using PPW automates very extensive scripts of hundreds of steps to produce the very best you will get out of your images.

In my camera bag

I no longer have a DSLR or AFS lenses except for a 300 mm f/4 PF lens which will work with my Nikon Z8 mirrorless body with an adapter. In addition, I replaced all my other lenses to Z lenses to include a 24-120 mm f/4S Z, a 105 mm, f/2.8 Macro lens, a 70-200 f/2.8 s Z lens and a 14-30 f/4 S Z lens. I kept 3 manual focus lenses from my Nikon F film days, a 50 mm f/1.4, a 55 mm f/2.8 macro lens and a 24 mm f/2.8 lens. I still use my old SB 800 flash units as they work with the Z8.

Feedback

Some things are obvious, keep a camera handy as you never know what you will see. I didn't have a tripod with me, so I had to shoot handheld. A tripod would have allowed for a slower shutter speed to smooth out the water. During a sunset, keep shooting and move through different angles as the sunset changes. Don't quit until it is down.
