wow so beautiful. Your detail achieved is excellent - I agree, these butterflies make you want to create a bit of 'magic' - it's almost 'natural.'.

Location
I took this in the Butterfly Pavilion in Albuquerque, one of my favorite places because of the variety of butterflies there.Time
I got there in the late morning and spent a couple of hours. I know I forgot the time and never wanted to leave, as is typical for me when I'm shooting.Lighting
This is a screened pavilion so the natural light is excellent. We had some high overcast that day, which helped with contrast.Equipment
I had no tripod, just my Nikon D5300 camera and 55-300 lens. Pictures of butterflies have to be taken so quickly, I try to get my exposure set on the first few shots so I don't have to think about it for each photo. I never use flash, preferring natural light.Inspiration
I loved the plant where this butterfly had landed - like a miniature world of its own. I love whimsy, and this fit right into my Alice in Wonderland kind of look I was hoping for. There is nothing more inspirational that the beautiful creatures of nature.Editing
I used CC Photoshop for some basic editing, as well as a light texture for background color, and a bokeh brush to add to the natural bokeh. In my camera bag
My Nikon D5300 DSLR, several lenses depending one what I'm shooting, polarizer filters for each lens, microfiber cloths, and extra lens-cap leashes and memory cards. My two go-to lenses are the Nikon 55-300 and the Sigma 18-250 macro - a great all-round lens.Feedback
For capturing butterflies, whether in a pavilion or in my garden, I prefer early morning or late afternoon light - or high overcast. Overcast light really brings out colors and cuts down on contrast problems, while still allowing enough light to shoot fast. For me it took a lot of practice to capture my favorite subjects - birds, bees and butterflies - as they are very fast and don't give you much time. I do wish they would pose more often! I know my subjects and surroundings well enough to get my settings right quickly. Because of using a long lens so often, I do usually shoot with an ISO of 400-800 - always depending on the light. Most of all, love what you shoot!
