What will you do to to get to hard to reach locations. I had a big day and Hopkins falls was the last and the most awaited one in my list for the day. I finally decided to head towards Hopkins falls. You can see the falls from the lookout but to get a clear cracking shot YOU got to get to the base(don't forget your gummboots). The light was just great, cold temp, and about to rain. I used my 10 stops nd filter to get a long exposure with a wide open aperture to get every thing sharp starting from the nearby swirls until the background.
Ps: if you are planning to go to photograph Hopkins falls, Aus, do not try to jump over the fences, they are electrified and I paid my price that day(but I guess I was lucky). It looks easy to reach from over the fences which are electrified and has no warning boards around. You can access it from a 'not so much visible path' around the area, which leads you on the left side of the falls. This is a one single exposure.

Chaosphoto, Hopkins falls is in Warrnambool, Aus. If you ever decide to visit 12 Apostles, this is one of the nearby waterfalls which can be easily visited along with Hopetoun and beauchamp falls.

It's such a surreal looking photo, perhaps from another planet? I love it and I'm glad you're ok after the electric fence. That must have been quite a jolt!

Thanks DebJay, yeah that was a tough experience on its own and must say worth it. I have learnt to be more careful while shooting and not just carried away with it.

I was scrolling through some of the most popular shots for the contest "my best shot" and this one stopped me. It's so stunning and unique that it commands attention. Outstanding job!

As close to "the perfect shot" that you could possibly get. Well done!

Thanks mate, its a bit late now. And I could have removed the grass when I was working on this image but I left it deliberately to show the start point of the image.

Location
I shot this photo near Warrnambool (15 minutes northeast). I went for a couple of days road trip to coastal Australia and while I was there I decided to visit one of well known falls-The Hopkins Falls-. I have been to many places that day but kept Hopkins falls at the end of of my agenda just like the desserts after the meal.Time
After I was done photographing the bay of islands, Logan beach and few other locations, it was already about 16:00 hrs when I decided to wind up the trip with Hopkins Falls.Lighting
The lighting was great, should say perfect to work with your ND filters. The day was mostly cloudy with sun hardly popping out from behind the clouds. The water falls and the swirls were pure white if not blueish white. The best part about that time was the black clouds gathering up which you can see above the falls.Equipment
I used Nikon D810 with nikkor 14-24mm wide angle lens with focal length 24mm and aperture wide open to capture the details all the way to the background. I set the camera on my gitzo explorer tripod and used hoya nd1000 which is approx 9 stops nd filter to extend the shutter speed to capture the swirls. I triggered the shutter using giga pro 2 shutter release.Inspiration
I have been doing research about the waterfalls in Vic, Aus. Most of the waterfalls are at coastal areas although I live in country side. When we decided to visit the beaches I knew it was a good opportunity to pay a visit at as many water falls as I could and Hopkins falls was the one out of them.Editing
Yes I did, but the good thing about capturing a good photograph at the first place is you don't have to process the image too much and by that reason the processing remains least destructive. I did some dodging and burning and applied luminosity masks for a couple of zones in the photo and got some details out from the rocks. In my camera bag
I carry 2 cameras and 4 lenses which are: Nikon D810 (FX) and D7100 (DX), Nikkor AF-S 14-24 and 24-70mm f2.8 G ED lenses, Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm f2.8 G ED VR II lens and the last one which I rarely use is AF-S Nikkor 18-105mm 3.5-5.6 zoom lens. I carry Nikon SB 910 speedlight which I have recently bought for my studio photography. I use a Gitzo Explorer series II tripod with Gitzo series II Magnesium off-centre ball head. For shutter release I use Hahnel Giga T Pro II remote control. For Filters I use Hoya circular polarizer, Hoya and Tiffen 10 stop ND filters and a hoya GND 3 stops filter. I also carry 2 shade 10 welding glasses which fits my 18-105 and 24-70 mm lens. I also carry a 3rd party remote for D7100 and last but not least 2 torches 2200 Lm zoomable CREE led and a normal led light that fits on the head.Feedback
Yes, before you just start taking photos from the lookout itself try to imagine the photo if it was shot from the base. Compare the two photos and you would definitely want to reach the base. If you feel lazy to walk down to the base ask yourself this question "will you ever be coming here again and will this day be repeated in you life? " Carry your gumboots and a plastic bag as the spray from the falls would definitely wet your camera even if you are at a considerable distance from it. You can push yourself further by not just standing on the side but moving into the water wearing your gumboots (depending on the depth of the water) and using your tripod on a steady base. Look around and see the textures of the water flowing you might find something interesting like I found these swirls. Now some advice to the people who are in Aus or planning to go to Hopkins falls in particular. You would get the urge to just jump over the fence which would leave you on the right side of the falls, well 'DON'T DO THAT'. I tried the same and paid the price. The fences are electrified with no warning sings around. There is another path from behind the lookout which will leave you to the left of the falls like you can see in the photo.
