This image is from my recent trip to NZ. A portrait of milky way perpendicular over the Church of Good Shepherd. I did not do much changes to the image as I was quite happy with the original image itself. This is a one single exposure.

This amazing work. I love all the details you captured between the sky and the church. The stars look like smoke descending out of the church and ascending up to the heavens above.

Lewishopkins, basically at night I set my lens focal length to the last point before infinity. With 14-24mm everything is sharp anyway unless you are shooting something really really up close.

hi Emma, this was shot from a Nikon d810, 14-24mm f.28 lens. I guess there should be a field somewhere that would show the specs of most of the photos

Location
I shot this image at lake Tekapo, NZ. This is one of the most famous tourist destinations in South Island. The Church of good Shepherd is active and probably one of the most photographed churches in the world.Time
This was at around 23:00 when most of the tourists have left except the photographers and their friends who were still there to witness the milky way show. Luckily the sky was clear that night and milkyway was out and about with crystal clear sky.Lighting
Since this church is hardly 200 meters away from the town, it was lit by the town lights. However, I was able to capture the milkyway with no problems, the foreground was highlighted from the town lights and the approaching cars every now and then. The formula there was basically to work on your composition and then keep shooting until you get a clear shot. It is not easy as there is always someone in your frame that is why you have to keep taking photos until you get that one photo.Equipment
I used Nikon D810 E with 14-24mm lens on Gitzo explorer tripod and a remote to trigger the shutter.Inspiration
I did my research before leaving for NZ. I had this one on my agenda as well. I had seen most of the photos shot during the day and many at night. I was happy with this composition where the milky way was perpendicular right above the church.Editing
I did not do much changes in the photo as I was happy with the raw image itself. I increased the contrast in the sky and sharpened the stars a little. Other than that some color balance and finally cropping. In my camera bag
I carry 2 cameras and 4 lenses which are: Nikon D810 (FX) and D7100 (DX), Nikkor AF-S 14-24 and 24-70mm f2.8 G ED lenses, Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm f2.8 G ED VR II lens and the last one which I rarely use is AF-S Nikkor 18-105mm 3.5-5.6 zoom lens. I carry Nikon SB 910 speedlight which I have recently bought for my studio photography. I use a Gitzo Explorer series II tripod with Gitzo series II Magnesium off-centre ball head. For shutter release I use Hahnel Giga T Pro II remote control. For Filters I use Hoya circular polarizer, Hoya and Tiffen 10 stop ND filters and a hoya GND 3 stops filter. I also carry 2 shade 10 welding glasses which fits my 18-105 and 24-70 mm lens. I also carry a 3rd party remote for D7100 and last but not least 2 torches 2200 Lm zoomable CREE led and a normal led light that fits on the head.Feedback
To capture something similar, you definitely need a dslr camera, a wide angle sharp lens and a tripod. Other than that, remember to wear a warm jacket as it gets really really cold there at night. And finally, keep shooting until you get a few shots you are satisfied with.
